WAY UP HERE - VENTURA LIGHTS

Teneteli d'occhio!

When i was a child, i had the passion for the drums. I remember that "played" buckets, pans and bins tith the legendary "wood spoon": there was always the same end, my mom chased me - like Marge Simpson with Bart - with the same spoon, because i had broken through someone.
This passion, over the years, it has never gone (despite my mother), and roaming on Youtube, i often stop to see video of more or less famous drummers.
In this way i discovered Cobus Potgieter, a 28 years old south-african boy. His channel is full of covers of famous song. The sound, style and tecnique made him one of the most clicked drummers on Youtube, with over one hundred millions views. Yes, i know, there are thousands of good drummers on the "tube", why should Cobus be different from the others? Now i'll explain!
In 2012, the good Cobus raised the bar. He wanted to produce an album but he lacked a band. And he had a simple but brilliant idea: thanks to Youtube and counting on millions of fans, he held the hearings. Over 450 musicians from all over the world sent him videos of their performances and between them, he selected members of his group, the "Ventura Lights": Justin Hicks from Georgia (vocals), Evan Collins from South Carolina (bass), Bear Rose from North Carolina and BJ Bryant from Tennesse (guitars).
There's more! Thanks to the donations, he was able to collect more than $ 50,000 to finance themselves and the entire production of the album in Los Angeles, without being subject to the rules and to the pressure from the musical labels.
It has been created a site http://myyoutubebandproject.com from whick you could follow all the stages of the project, from auditions to rehearsals and then to recording.
On 10.22.2013, they made their debut on iTunes with "Way Up Here", finishing straight to 46th place in the ranking of rock songs. I was one of the first to buy it.
Personally, i like the album a lot, the sound is fresh and energetic. The voice of Justin Hicks immediately strikes, he has a pleasant timbre and a great extension. Some songs are very engaging, with "Set it off" is automatic to move the head in time. "Superheroes" is the perfect soundtrack for a Marvel movie.
The potentiality of the musicians is reilly high, just listen to the guitar solo in "Breaking out". Maybe they could dare a little more with the technicalities, but i respect the desire to keep a low profile with this debut album.
There is no shortage of pleasing ballads such as "Stars" (very intimate in acoustic version), "Space" and "Find rest", that highlights the vocal talent of Hicks. So, it's a good work. I hope that this group is not a meteor, because the enthusiasm and the passion that drove five strangers who came from different countries to make an album so well done only for the love of music is to encourage and support. Keep an eye on them!
